ICTS is pleased to announce the awardees of the second annual Dean's Triumvirate Grant at UC Irvine. The Triumvirate Grant is a funding mechanism sponsored by the School of Medicine to foster the development of new collaborations among scientists of different disciplines, especially collaborations among clinical scientists and investigators from outside of the School of Medicine. This year we received 19 submissions.

The review process was managed by the ICTS through a special committee led by Dr. Pietro Galasetti. Drs. Gary Olson and Judy Olson of the Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences reviewed the quality of the collaboration within each proposal. The six top-reviewed proposals were forwarded for a final review to an independent group of translational scientists from UCSD kindly led by Dr. Sonia Ancoli-Israeli.

Two research teams were selected to receive this year's honor. The first is an award of $50,000 to Drs. Peter Kaiser, Virginia Kimonis and Lan Huang for their project entitled: Therapeutic targets for treatment of Hereditary Inclusion Body Myopathy (IBMPFD). This grant combines talent found in our Schools of Medicine and Biological Sciences. The second is an award of $15,000 to Drs. Wendy Liu, Jonathan Lakey and Peter Donavan for their project entitled: A Microengineered Platform To Generate Functional ß -Cell Clusters From Human Embryonic Stem Cells. This grant combines talent found in our Schools of Medicine and Biomedical Engineering.

These scholars were honored at the annual ICTS Triumvirate Awards Luncheon on Thursday, April 21, 2011.
