UC Irvine Institute for Clinical and Translational Science

Building the Next Generation of Translational Scholars— A Unique Opportunity for Physicians and Translational Investigators Early in Their Careers

The UC Irvine Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) is pleased to announce the establishment of a pre-doctoral (TL-1) training awards program under the new NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA). The "Crossing Boundaries" training program is designed to integrate training in clinical research and translational science into the core curriculum of students in medicine, public health, nursing, pharmaceutical sciences, biomedical and social sciences, physical sciences, engineering, and informatics.

During 2010-2011, we anticipate appointing two to four medical students and up to two Ph.D. students as ICTS TL-1 Scholars. Medical students will be required to devote a year fully to this mentored translational research effort, extending the duration of their MD degree experience by a year during which they may pursue a Masters degree or Certificate program in an area relevant to the mission of ICTS. ICTS TL-1 Scholars are expected to fully engage with the mentoring and academic monitoring opportunities provided by the ICTS. The scholars will receive a stipend, fees and tuition, and research and travel funds from the ICTS.

This is a call for expression of interest and pre-applications for 2010/2011. Pre-applications, including current NIH Biosketch and a statement of research interests and career goals (limit to 1000 words) should be submitted no later than Friday, September 3rd, 2010. Submit pre-applications in a single PDF file at ICTS website http://www.icts.uci.edu/awards. ICTS staff will contact applicants by September 15th after initial review. Full applications are due by September 24th. Additional information about the ICTS Crossing Boundaries Educational, Training, and Career Development Program is available on the ICTS website: http://www.icts.uci.edu/tl1.cfm.

Please look for our revised, abridged application in the coming week.
