Mentoring: As an educator at UCI, Dr. Stokols has worked to promote excellence and innovation in several arenas of mentorship and teaching. He has chaired 25 Ph.D. dissertations and served as faculty mentor for scores of undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students as well as postdoctoral scholars. Several of his Ph.D. advisees have gone on to establish distinguished research and teaching careers, including Dr. David Marrero, the J.O. Richey Professor of Medicine at Indiana University and recipient of the Outstanding Educator Award from the American Diabetes Association in 2008 and the UCI Lauds and Laurels Distinguished Alumni Award in 2006. Dr. Stokols served as Associate Director for Graduate Studies for the Program in Social Ecology at UCI from 1977-1983. He also directed the UCI-National Institute of Mental Health Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Training Program in Environmental Demands, Human Development, and Health from 1981-1986. Since 2004, Dr. Stokols has served as Co-Director (with Professor John Whiteley) of UCI’s innovative Interdisciplinary Summer Undergraduate Research Experience Program (ID-SURE, www.urop.uci.edu). The ID-SURE Program was established with a grant from the National Institute of Health’s Roadmap Interdisciplinary Training Program and combines interdisciplinary coursework with an intensive summer research fellowship experience. It is one of the very few interdisciplinary training programs for undergraduates in the nation. Dr. Stokols’ commitment to excellence in teaching and mentorship has been recognized through a number of awards including the UCI Chancellor’s Award for Fostering Undergraduate Research in 2003; the Social Ecology Student Association’s Professor of the Year Award in 2004 and 2007; the UCI Outstanding Professor Award for the School of Social Ecology, selected by UCI’s 2009 Senior Class; and UCI’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program’s Faculty Mentor of the Month Award during fall 2009.

Research: Dr. Stokols’ research in environmental and health psychology has examined the behavioral and health impacts of physical conditions such as urban density, traffic congestion, and airport noise. His current work focuses on the links between people’s increasing Internet use and a variety of outcomes including their exposure to information overload and stress, and their attachment to local places and social networks. Another focus of Dr. Stokols’ current research is the study of interdisciplinary research teams and training centers to identify circumstances that enhance or hinder scientific collaboration spanning multiple fields. Additionally, Dr. Stokols’ research has focused on the design and evaluation of community health promotion programs. He directed the Transdisciplinary Core Research Program of the UCI-NIH Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center (TTURC) from 1999-2004. He served as Director of UCI’s Program in Social Ecology from 1988-1992 and as founding Dean of the School of Social Ecology from 1992-1998. Dr. Stokols currently serves as Scientific Consultant to the National Cancer Institute for the evaluation of NCI’s transdisciplinary research and training centers. He received the Annual Career Award of the Environmental Design Research Association in 1991 and UCI’s Lauds & Laurels Faculty Achievement Award in 2003.
