| Mentoring: Dr. DiSaia is a celebrated mentor who provides effective basic science research training for the development of physician scientists specializing in gynecologic oncology. He uses his mentoring skills to foster multiple levels of interactions between clinical and basic scientists to promote the transfer and exchange of information. His 50 prior trainees include Dr. John Chan, Associate Professor and Director of Gynecologic Oncology at UCSF. In recognition of his outstanding mentoring abilities, Dr. DiSaia was awarded the Frederick Naftolin Award for Mentorship by the Society for Gynecologic Investigation (SGI) in 2007. He is currently mentoring 6 trainees. |

| Research: Dr. DiSaia's clinical research interests focus on ovarian cancer, which is the fourth most common cause of cancer-related death in American women. Many patients with advanced disease (stage III and IV) initially respond to standard therapies, as evident by second look laparotomies. Unfortunately, up to 50% of these patients with negative second look laparotomies will have recurrences and ultimately succumb to their disease. As a result, it is necessary to develop improved diagnostic and therapeutic methods for this disease. Dr. DiSaia has dedicated the past 30 years of his professional life to the study of ovarian carcinoma and other gynecologic cancers, and the identification of better methods for prevention, early diagnosis and treatment. Currently Chairman of the Board for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG), Dr. DiSaia's career research contributions have been recognized by countless awards including the Silver medal for a Brilliant Career in Medicine by the Veracruzano Center for Prevention of Cancer in Women (Veracruz, Mexico, 2006), and inclusion in the 25th Silver Anniversary Edition of Who's Who in the World (2008). |
