Hoda Anton-Culver, PhD
Professor and Chair, Epidemiology, UC Irvine Founder and Director, Genetic Epidemiology Research Institute (GERI)

Current PI funding: NIH/NCI (PSA-042205), Cancer Genetics Network (2007-2012) NIH/NCI (R01-CA58860-14), Hereditary breast cancer: Genetic/molecular studies (1994-2009)

Mentoring: Dr. Anton-Culver brings more than three decades of direct mentoring experience to the ICTS Council of Mentors. She chairs the Mentoring Committee at the UCI School of Medicine in research advancement of junior faculty; co-directs the joint Ph.D. graduate program in epidemiology for the College of Medicine and the School of Social Ecology; and has served as the Course Director for UC Irvine's Epidemiology and Biostatistics course since 1978. During her career she has mentored dozens of exemplary trainees - such as Dr. Wendy Brewster, who is now Director of the Women's Health Center at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Research: As Founder and the Chair of the Genetic Epidemiology Research Institute (GERI), Dr. Anton-Culver has brought together a multidisciplinary team of exceptional scientists from complementary fields, including epidemiology, developmental and cell biology, molecular biology and biochemistry, evolutionary biology, genetics, immunology, statistics, bioinformatics, and environmental and behavioral sciences. Her research combines epidemiologic approaches with basic science methods to test hypotheses related to genetic bases of the etiology and progression of disease. She actively participates in the Enhanced Single Visit Cervical Cancer Screening Program, which takes an innovative approach to screen women for cervix cancer and provide early treatment for severe cervix dysplasia in a single-visit program for the Latino/Hispanic community.
