2015 Outstanding Community Research Award
Dr. Dara H. Sorkin
Dr. Sorkin has forged lasting relationships with numerous community clinics in both Los Angeles and Orange County that serve underserved populations, including the Long Beach Children's Clinic serving low income and at risk families, the Community Medical Wellness Center serving the Cambodian population in Los Angeles, Healthy Smiles who provide dental care to underserved children throughout Orange County , and Share Ourselves, a patient-centered medical home providing high quality, comprehensive safety net services to the Orange County community. Through her work training graduate students to design and implement program evaluation, she has had the opportunity to work with and learn from many community-based organizations throughout Orange County.
Dr. Sorkin, and her colleague, Dr. Karen Rook, recently received an R01 NIH grant award to further their work on the Unidas por la Vida (United for Life) project: a novel dyadic intervention designed to improve health behaviors and promote weight loss in two at-risk members of the same family: mothers with type 2 diabetes and their overweight/obese adult daughters who are at risk for developing diabetes. This project is a partnership between Drs. Sorkin and Rook, and AltaMed, the largest independent Federally Qualified Community Health Center in the U.S., delivering more than 930,000 annual patient visits through its 43 sites in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.
