2015 Distinguished Faculty Mentor Award

The Institute for Clinical and Translational Science is pleased to announce the 2015 Distinguished Faculty Award Recipient. This award is given to a UC Irvine faculty member who has shown an outstanding commitment to mentoring, advising, and support of clinical and translational science research. It is given to a mentor who has exceeded the standard role played by an advisor with respect to growth in the professional field, influencing the research work of their mentees, and providing outstanding personal support and development.

Dr. Jaime Landman
Dr. Landman, Chair of the Department of Urology and Professor of Urology and Radiology, is an expert in the management of kidney cancer and is a pioneer and internationally recognized expert on the application of minimally invasive techniques for the ablation of kidney cancer.

Dr. Landman is a prime example of outstanding commitment to career development of young investigators. Recognizing the need for all UCI physicians to reach out to our community to build the pipeline for the next generation of academic clinicians, Dr. Landman has built teaching and experiential learning programs that target high school and undergraduate students. Through these programs, Dr. Landman has created an environment in his department where mentoring is honored and its best practices passed on, a "Mentoring Chain". As noted by former Dean of the School of Medicine Ralph Clayman, "His understanding and diligent application of mentoring are truly outstanding and the results have been and continue to be so beneficial to so many." Dr. Landman is also a highly accomplished researcher with 200 peer reviewed manuscripts and an invited faculty or visiting professor at over 200 meetings world-wide. He has pioneered technology for minimally invasive management of renal malignancies and has developed novel techniques that are used globally for laparoscopic partial nephrectomy.

His mentees have reiterated how he provides professional support, encouragement of research activities, and, when appropriate, counsel and advice in areas of personal growth and development... "Dr. Landman cares very much about my career development; he supports me in all aspects, including research, academic and clinical activities. He cares to provide with all possible resources to help my career progress." "I had the privilege observing him in the operating room as well as his interaction with his patients and collaborators. Despite his busiest schedule, he provides his undivided attention to his mentees"
